Inquartation: An Alternative for High-Silver Alloys

While Aqua Regia is highly effective, it has limitations with materials containing high silver content (above 10%). In such cases, we recommend the inquartation procedure.

Here, the gold is diluted to around 25% by melting it with copper or silver. This “quartered” gold alloy can then be treated with nitric acid, which dissolves the silver and base metals, leaving behind pure gold.
